Chris Reed ‘06 took his first research service-learning (RSL) gateway class at Duke University in the fall of 2007 and got hooked. RSL is an emerging practice that connects service-learning with the mission of research universities to create new knowledge.

In the 2007 project, Chris and four classmates worked with the Cleveland-Holloway Neighborhood Association to identify neighborhood priorities and goals, and to develop strategies to achieve them.

More recently, Chris was on a team working with the Cleveland-Holloway Neighborhood Association, the Old West Durham Neighborhood Association (OWDNA) and Uplift East Durham to facilitate the installation of a sidewalk on a specific street, and augment the number of streetlights on other neighborhood streets. The neighborhood association had been trying to complete this task for years, but had made little progress in gaining support for the project from Duke and Durham officials.
